This step-by-step article describes how to enable or to disable the display of a warning message every time that you click a hyperlink in a Microsoft Office program.

This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. In Microsoft Office applications, when you click a hyperlink or an object that links to an executable file, you receive the following warning message:

Additionally, when you open either TIFF images or Microsoft Document Imaging (MDI) files, you receive the following warning message:

You receive this warning message even when you have already implemented the registry key that this article describes. This warning message comes from the HLINK.dll file when link navigation is handled. You can differentiate the Microsoft Office hyperlink warning message from the HLINK warning message by looking for quotation marks around the file path in the warning message. The Microsoft Office message contains quotation marks. The HLINK message does not contain quotation marks. Microsoft Office tries to determine whether the file type itself is unsafe by checking the extension, the progid, the classid, and the MIME type of the document.

How to globally enable or disable hyperlink warnings

To enable or to disable the hyperlink warnings in Microsoft Office programs when an https:// address, a notes:// address, or an ftp:// address is used, you must create a new registry subkey. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

  2. In the Open dialog box, type regedit, and then click OK.

    Note

    • You have to modify only one of these registry subkeys. You do not have to modify both.
    • If the Security subkey already exists, go directly to step 6 after you select the Security subkey.

  3. Locate and then select the following registry subkey (if the subkey does not exist, create it manually):HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOfficexx.0Common

    Note In this subkey, replace 'xx.0' with 12.0 for Office 2007, 14.0 for Office 2010, 15.0 for Office 2013, and 16.0 for Office 2016 and later.

  4. Click the registry subkey, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click Key.

  5. Type Security, and then press Enter to name the key.

  6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

  7. Type DisableHyperlinkWarning, and then press Enter to name the entry.

  8. In the right pane, right-click DisableHyperlinkWarning, and then click Modify.

  9. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, click Decimal, and then type 1 or 0 under Value data.

    Note

    A value of 0 enables the hyperlink warning message. A value of 1 disables the hyperlink warning message.

  10. Click OK.

  11. Exit Registry Editor.

How to enable or disable hyperlink warnings per protocol

To disable the display of security warnings for a specific protocol, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

  2. Locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftOfficexx.0CommonSecurityTrusted ProtocolsAll Applications

    Note In this subkey, replace 'xx.0' with 12.0 for Office 2007, 14.0 for Office 2010, 15.0 for Office 2013, and 16.0 for Office 2016 and later.

  3. Click the All Applications subkey.

  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.

  5. Type the name of the protocol that you want to exclude. For example, to disable the display of a security warning for the 'Notes:' protocol, type Notes:.

    Note Make sure that you include the colon (:) character.

  6. Press Enter.

  7. Exit Registry Editor.

If you still receive a warning message

After you disable warning messages, you may still receive a warning message from Microsoft Windows. If you continue to receive a warning message after you follow the steps in this article, use one of the following methods to resolve the issue.

Note

Method 1 applies only to Windows XP and to earlier versions of Windows. For Windows Vista and for later versions of Windows, use method 2.

Method 1: Turn off the 'Confirm open after download' option for the file type that you are trying to open

  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. On the File Types tab, select the appropriate file name extension (for example, WMV) in the Registered File Types box, and then click Advanced.
  4. Click to clear the Confirm open after download check box, and then click OK.
  5. In the Folder Options dialog box, click Close.

Method 2: Modify the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT<CLSID>EditFlags registry subkey

Use this method if the warning message affects multiple computers.

To disable the warning message, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

  2. Locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT<CLSID>EditFlags

    For example, if the file name extension is WMV, select HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTWMVFileEditFlags

  3. Click EditFlags, and then click Rename on the Edit menu.

  4. Type OldEditFlags, and then press ENTER.

  5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD value.

  6. Type EditFlags, and then press ENTER.

  7. On the Edit menu, click Modify.

  8. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, click Hexadecimal under Base.

  9. Type 10000, and then click OK.

To re-enable the warning message, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

  2. Locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT<CLSID>EditFlags

  3. Click EditFlags, and then click Modify on the Edit menu.

  4. Type 0, and then click OK.

    Download and run the Windows Install Cleanup Tool being very careful to only check the MS Office apps.

  3. Try opening Office in 'safe mode' before doing a reinstall or uninstall. Hold down the ctrl key and click on the excel icon. it should tell you that you're starting it in safe mode, click ok to that message. If it starts up ok, then it's an addon that's causing the problem. if it doesn't start up ok, and shuts down then you can go into event viewer and see if it recorded the error there. it could be a simple 'repair' that's needed as others suggested, or it may be something not office related. Event viewer can be launched by click the start 'orb' and in the search box type event and it should come up in the search results. Once open, click on the arrow next to 'Windows Logs'. Then go to Applications and check the last few entries for the office shutdown. Or click the arrow next to 'Applications and Services' and then go to 'Microsoft Office Alerts' and see if it recorded anything there. Once you get an event and get the basic description, and event id, post it here, or do a search online and you should be able to find a resolution. If there is nothing in event viewer then try a reinstall as the others have suggested.

Use the following methods in the order in which they are presented. If you try one of these methods and it does not help, go to the next method.

Method 1: Start Excel in safe mode

Safe mode lets you safely use Excel without encountering certain startup programs. You can open Excel in safe mode by pressing and holding Ctrl while you start the program or by using the '/safe' option (that is, excel.exe /safe) when you start the program from the command line. When you run Excel in safe mode, it bypasses functionality and settings such as alternative startup location, changed toolbars, the xlstart folder, and Excel add-ins. (However, COM add-ins are excluded.)

If your issue is not resolved after you start Excel in safe mode, go to method 2.

Method 2: Investigate possible issues with COM add-ins Many developers create add-ins for Excel. These add-ins are divided into two types

  • Excel add-ins that are saved as .xla, .xlam, or .xll files.
  • COM add-ins. These add-ins usually have to be installed and include DLLs and registry keys. COM add-ins created for one version of Excel frequently are incompatible with a newer version, and may cause the system to stop responding. They are not disabled by safe mode.

The simplest way to resolve this possible cause is to run this troubleshooter.

If the troubleshooter resolves the issue, but it recurs, you'll have to determine which add-in is causing the problem. To disable COM add-ins, follow these steps:

  1. Select File > Options > Add-ins.
  2. At the bottom of the dialog box, change the Manage dropdown to COM add-ins, and select Go.
  3. Clear the check box for any enabled COM add-ins. select OK.If disabling the COM add-ins alleviates the issue, try enabling them one at a time to test for the problem add-in.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, continue to method 3.

Method 3: Investigate Excel file details and contents

Excel files can exist on the computer for a long time. They are upgraded from version to version and frequently travel from one user to another user. Frequently, a user inherits an Excel file but doesn't know what is included in the file. The following areas can cause performance or crashing issues:

  • Formulas referencing entire columns.
  • Array formulas referencing an uneven number of elements in the arguments.
  • Hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of hidden or size 0 height and width objects.
  • Too many styles caused by frequent copying and pasting between workbooks.
  • Too many (as well as invalidly defined) names.

Inspect and simplify your files if possible.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, continue to method 4.

Method 4: Check whether your file is being generated by a third party

Sometimes Excel files are generated by a third-party application. In this case, the files may be generated incorrectly, and some features may not work correctly when you open the files in Excel. If this occurs, test the features in new files outside the third-party application. If the features work correctly, make sure that the third party is aware of the issue.

If your issue is not resolved after you test it outside the third-party application, go to method 5.

Method 5: Perform a selective startup to determine whether a program, process, or service conflicts with Excel

When you start Windows as usual, several applications and services start automatically and then run in the background. These applications and services can interfere with other software on your device. Performing a selective startup (also known as a 'clean boot') can help you identify problems with conflicting applications. To perform a selective startup, see How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

If your issue is not resolved after a clean boot, go to method 6.

Method 6: Check whether your antivirus software is up to date or is conflicting with Excel

Antivirus software can interfere with Excel, and cause performance issues. Frequently updating your AV software can correct the issue.

To keep up with new viruses that are created, antivirus software vendors periodically provide updates that you can download from the Internet. How to check whether antivirus software is conflicting with Excel

If your antivirus software includes integration with Excel, you may experience performance issues. In this case, you can disable all Excel integration within the antivirus software by creating exceptions for Excel files.

Important

Changing your antivirus settings may make your PC vulnerable to viral, fraudulent, or malicious attacks. We do not recommend that you try to change your antivirus settings. Use this workaround at your own risk. You may have to contact your antivirus software vendor to determine how to configure software to exclude any integration with Excel.
